Release: 1991
Publisher: Hershey's Food Corporation
Format: Spiral-bound 94 pages
As a cookbook: This cookbook was originally produced around 1990 as a marketing/advertising opportunity. I believe that you sent in proof of purchase from two Hershey's products and about $4 for shipping and handling to get it. Because of this focus on promoting their products, the recipes don't call for "chocolate chips"; they specify "Hershey's® brand semi-sweet chocolate morsels" or whatever the marketing-speak is for their particular brand's version of some normal ingredient. My favorite is the one that specifies that you have to use mini chocolate chips -- even though you're going to melt them. The book included a couple of coupons in the back for getting more copies of the cookbook as well as buying some of the ingredients. These are family-friendly, average-skill recipes. There are a wide variety of desserts: cakes, pies, cookies, candies, cheesecakes, and sauces, including some reduced-calorie desserts (but nothing using sugar substitutes like Equal or Splenda). There are no exotic ingredients: everything you need will be available at any grocery store. Only a couple contain any alcoholic flavorings. Any typical teenager could easily master all of the cooking techniques in the book. It's a hardcover book but spiral-bound, which I think is the ideal arrangement for a cookbook, because it stands up nicely on the shelf with the other cookbooks, but lays perfectly flat when you're using it. The cover wipes clean with a damp cloth, which is also a nice touch. As a book: Sometimes this cookbook lives on my kitchen shelf with the other cookbooks, and sometimes it's in the living room with the kids' books. This cookbook and one very similar to it, on Eagle brand's sweetened condensed milk, have been very popular with younger kids as a book. There's a photo for each recipe, and they love flipping through the cookbooks and talking about the pictures as much as they love looking at Dr Seuss books. The kids look at the pictures of a given dessert and talk about what they think the ingredients are (It's pink, so could that be strawberry? cherry? raspberry?) and sometimes how they think it might taste or how it's made. It's kind of a "coffee table book" for the preschool crowd -- something to look at in a quiet moment, or to use as a conversation starter. Some readers may be surprised to hear that talking about these recipes has never resulted in demands for sweets, but this has been my experience. I have "read" this book dozens of times with at least five different preschool girls, and while we have talked about "maybe someday we'll make that and find out" or even made some of the treats, I have never encountered a demand for sweets as a result, or had a child claim to be hungry as a result. Our track record is zero temper tantrums -- zero anything even close to "I WANT THIS NOW" demands. That may be due to the kids' deep and abiding conviction that being rude to me has never, and will never, achieve their goals, but I think it actually has more to do with our interest in seeing what's on the next page. Kids are interested in food, and there's a lot to discover in this little book if you're willing to sit down and look at each page in turn and ask a kid-sized question like, "Do you think this one is crunchy or creamy?" or "Does that look frozen to you? Do you think it's supposed to be cold?" Unless looking at pictures of desserts makes you desperate for something sweet, then I recommend it as a non-cookbook "just plain book" for the kids' bookshelf
